The suburbs closest to the water cop the salt air and the sea breeze, and it shows up first in the fixings and at the base of the posts. We build through Ocean Reef, Currambine, Marmion, Carine, Duncraig and Padbury, where limestone walls and glass pool barriers come up as often as plain boundary fencing.
Blocks along this stretch often step down towards the coast, so a wall usually goes in before the fence does. We build both limestone and concrete sleeper walls, and the same crew does the fence on top, which means one price and a fence line that sits level once the wall is finished.
Greenwood and Warwick were built out through the 1970s and 80s, so the original timber fences in those streets are well past replacement age. Kingsley and Woodvale bring a lot of pool barrier work, where heights, gaps and gate latches all have to meet AS1926 before a council inspector will sign it off.
Closer to town the work changes. Osborne Park is light industrial, so it is mostly security fencing, garrison and automated gates, and Balcatta sits on the same mix of commercial yards and older homes.
Yokine is one of the busier infill suburbs in the City of Stirling. Blocks get split, new homes go up behind old ones, and the original post-war and 1960s houses are still carrying timber or fibro fencing that has had enough. Where a block has been cut for a new build or a driveway, retaining has to go in before the fence does.
Alexander Heights was built out through the 1980s on flat, sandy blocks, and those fences have now done thirty-five years of Perth sun. Backyard pools are common there, so barriers to AS1926 come up as often as boundary work. Marangaroo went up over the same period, and the gate is usually what fails first, since decades of being swung and leaned on drop the hinge side until it drags on the ground.
Girrawheen is older again, put together through the 1970s, with a higher share of rental and investment properties than the suburbs around it. Sheeting rusted through at the base and posts rotted off at ground level are the two things we get called out for most.
