Kingsley has one of the higher rates of backyard pools in the northern suburbs, which makes pool barriers an ongoing job here rather than a one-off. WA rules require every private pool to be fenced to AS1926 and inspected by the local council on a set cycle. Barriers that were signed off years ago often fail on the next round, usually because a gate has dropped and no longer self-closes from any position, because a gap has opened under a panel, or because a bin, pot plant or new garden bed has become a climbable object too close to the fence.
The suburb went up through the 1980s as a family area, so you get generous blocks, brick and tile homes and yards that were designed around a pool and a patio. Ground here is flat to gently sloping, and the soil is the loose sand common right across this part of Perth. Sand makes digging easy but it also means glass spigots and aluminium posts have to be footed properly or they’ll work loose. Where a block falls away toward the back fence, a short retaining wall squares things up before the barrier or the boundary fence goes in.

Frameless and semi-frameless glass keeps the view of the pool from the house and the patio, which is why most Kingsley owners ask about it first. The panels are toughened safety glass, the spigots and hinges are marine-grade stainless, and the whole barrier is set out to AS1926 spacings.
Setting glass is fussy work. Every spigot has to be core drilled or footed dead plumb or the panels won’t line up and the gate won’t sit square. We set out the run first, check it against the pool zone and any climbable objects nearby, then install and adjust until the gate swings shut and latches on its own every time.
Away from the pool, the boundary fence still has to do its job. A lot of Kingsley blocks are on their second fence already and the older Colorbond runs from the 90s are starting to show rust at the base and rails that have pulled loose in the wind.
We replace whole runs or patch a single failed section, whichever suits. Posts are galvanised and concreted, sheets are set to the ground line so there’s no gap for the dog, and the colour is matched to what’s already there when you’re only doing part of the boundary.
Flat-top aluminium is the practical choice when the barrier runs down a side of the yard nobody looks at, or when the budget is going into the pool itself. It’s powder coated, it won’t rust, and there are no spear tops for anyone to catch a leg on.
Panels come in heights and infill spacings that meet the standard straight out of the box, but that only helps if they’re installed right. We set the posts in concrete, keep the panel base at the correct clearance off the ground, and make sure the horizontal rails end up on the pool side where they can’t be used as a foothold.
The gate is where most Kingsley pool barriers fail. Springs weaken, hinges sag on a post that wasn’t set deep enough, and the latch ends up sitting too low or on the wrong side. An inspector will test the gate from a few centimetres open and from fully open, and it has to close and latch on its own from both.
We fit and adjust compliant self-closing, self-latching gates, and we’ll re-hang an existing gate rather than replace it if the frame is still sound. Latch height, hinge type and the swing direction all get checked against the standard before we leave.
Pool builds and yard renovations in Kingsley often leave a change of level that nothing will sit on properly. Sand slumps, paving cracks at the edge, and a fence run across the slope ends up with daylight under half the panels.
