A pool barrier in WA has to meet AS1926 and get signed off by the City of Joondalup, and older barriers put in years ago often no longer pass because the rules and the surrounding landscaping have both changed. The other half of our work here is retaining, usually to square up a yard before the pool or the lawn goes in.
The suburb was built out through the 1980s and 90s on generous blocks, so there is room to move and most homes are single storey brick and tile. Along the edge of Yellagonga Regional Park and Lake Goollelal the ground drops away, and those blocks often need a wall to hold a usable flat area. Underneath it all is the usual Perth sand over limestone, which drains beautifully but needs proper footings and drainage behind any wall you build in it.

Most pool barriers that fail inspection fail on the small things: a gap under the fence, a latch mounted at the wrong height, a gate that does not swing shut on its own, or a retaining wall, pot or aircon unit sitting close enough to climb. We measure the whole zone before quoting so those problems get designed out rather than discovered by the inspector.
Frameless glass gives you the view across the pool and suits a yard you have spent money on. Semi frameless costs less and still looks sharp. Flat top aluminium is the budget option, powder coated and basically maintenance free. We will tell you honestly which one suits your surround and your budget.
Blocks near the park edge and along the older streets often carry a fall of half a metre or more across the yard. Left alone, that means sand washing into the lawn and a strip of ground nobody uses. A retaining wall turns it into flat, usable space and stops the erosion.
Limestone blocks look right in a Perth backyard and age well. Concrete sleepers between galvanised steel posts cost less, go in faster and handle taller walls. Either way we dig proper footings and put drainage behind the wall, because a wall without drainage is a wall that eventually leans.
Slat fencing suits the front of a Woodvale home where a solid Colorbond fence would look heavy. Horizontal aluminium slats let light and air through, give you the privacy you want at eye level, and never need painting. Spacing can be tightened up if you want less of a view in from the street.
It also works well as a screen around a pool pump, a bin bay or an alfresco area. We match the powder coat to the gutters or the front door so it reads as part of the house instead of an add on.
Around the back and side boundaries, Colorbond is still the sensible pick. It gives you full privacy, it does not rot the way the old timber lapped fences did, and once it is up you can forget about it. On the bigger Woodvale blocks the runs are long, so getting the posts spaced and the line straight actually matters to how the finished job looks.
Where a boundary steps down we can either rake the fence with the ground or step it neatly, depending on how much of a gap you can live with. If the run sits on top of a retaining wall we build both, so the heights are worked out once and the pool barrier measurements still add up.
The gate is the part of a pool barrier that gets tested hardest and fails first. It has to self close and self latch from any position, every time, with no help. Hinges that have dropped a few millimetres are enough to stop that happening, which is why gates get replaced more often than the fence around them.
Side gates take a different kind of punishment: wheelie bins, mowers, trailers and kids. We build the frame square, hang it on heavy duty hinges and set the latch so it lines up now and still lines up in five years. Lockable if you want it, and wide enough for whatever you actually need to get through.
