Carine blocks are big, and a fair few of them slope. We hold the ground back properly first, then put a fence on top that stays where we put it.

Carine went up in the 1970s and the fences that came with those houses are well past retirement. Timber has gone brittle and grey, posts have rotted where they meet the sand, and rails have twisted enough that the palings no longer line up. Add to that the sheer size of the blocks here and you get long boundary runs where a bit of sag at one end turns into a proper lean over a few winters. Once it starts moving, patching it just delays the inevitable.

Mature trees complicate it further, because the root systems on those old gums and jarrahs run right through where post holes need to go. Working around them takes a bit of care rather than a bigger auger. Where the fall is significant, a retaining wall is not optional. It is the only thing that will keep the fence above it straight.

Standard height is 1.8 metres. Backing onto the reserve, some people go higher at the rear for privacy or add a lattice or slat top so it does not feel like a wall. We will bring colour samples out with us so you can hold them against the brickwork before deciding.

Limestone block suits the older brick and tile homes around here and weathers well. Concrete sleeper is quicker and cheaper on a long straight run, and panel-and-post works where access is tight. All of them go in with drainage behind so winter rain has somewhere to go instead of loading up the back of the wall.
Taking out an old Carine timber fence is a bigger job than most people expect. The posts were concreted in decades ago, tree roots have grown around the footings, and on the longer runs there is a lot of material to shift. We do the demolition, dig the old footings out and cart everything away.
If part of the run still has life in it, we will tell you. There is no sense replacing eighty metres when sixty of it is the problem. Where we take a section out, the new fence goes up the same week wherever we can so you are not left with an open boundary.
Big Carine backyards mean a lot of pools, and a pool barrier has to meet AS1926 and pass a council inspection before it can be filled. The things that fail an inspection are usually the same: a gap slightly too wide, a gate latch set too low, or a garden bed and pot arrangement that gives a kid something to climb.
We install frameless and semi-frameless glass where you want the yard to stay open, and flat-top aluminium where you would rather put the money elsewhere. Both meet the standard. Gates are set up to self-close and self-latch every time, with the latch at the correct height so the inspection is a formality rather than a worry.
