Both are limestone. They look and behave differently, and the right one depends on what you want the wall to say.
Natural limestone block
Cut straight from a WA quarry. Every block is slightly different — the colour varies, the face is rough and pitted, and the wall reads as part of the ground rather than something bolted onto it. It weathers, and most people think it improves as it does.

Reconstituted limestone block
Limestone that’s been crushed and reformed into uniform blocks. Consistent colour, consistent size, straight lines, clean joints. It’s stronger and more predictable than natural block, and it can go higher.
Suits newer homes, modern builds, long boundary runs, and any wall that’s carrying a Colorbond fence on top and needs to be dead level.

What makes a limestone wall last in Perth
A limestone wall is only as good as what’s behind it and underneath it — and neither is visible when the job’s finished.

Perth’s coastal sand doesn’t hold weight at shallow depth, so footings have to go until they find something that does. In some pockets you hit the limestone shelf and have to core into it. Guessing this depth is how walls end up leaning within two winters.
That same sand lets water sheet straight through, and it stacks up behind anything solid. Ag drain, clean aggregate backfill and an outlet to somewhere sensible take that pressure away — water pressure is what pushes limestone walls out at the belly, not the weight of the soil.
Backfill dumped in one go keeps settling for years and pulls the top course with it; filled in layers and compacted, it stays put. And because limestone blocks vary, working to a string line and levelling every course is slower, and it’s the difference between a wall that looks built and one that looks stacked.

How long does a limestone retaining wall last in Perth?
A limestone wall built with proper footings and drainage will outlast most things on your block. The ones that fail early almost always fail for the same two reasons — footings that didn’t reach solid ground, or no drainage behind the wall. Neither shows on the day it’s finished, which is why they’re the corners people cut.
Is limestone or concrete sleeper better for a retaining wall?
Different jobs. Limestone looks the part in Perth’s established suburbs and suits garden terracing, front yards and character homes. Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts are stronger for their footprint, go higher more easily and take a Colorbond fence on top cleanly. We’ll tell you which suits your block at the measure.
Do limestone retaining walls need drainage?
Yes, always. Perth sand lets water run straight through and it collects behind anything solid. Without an ag drain and free-draining backfill, that water pressure pushes the wall out. This is not optional, and any quote that leaves it out is quoting a different job.
Can you put a Colorbond fence on top of a limestone wall?
Yes, and we build them together as one job. Doing it as one job means the fence posts are set relative to the finished wall height, so you don’t end up with a gap under the fence or a fence that steps awkwardly along a level wall.
Do I need council approval for a limestone retaining wall?
Often. Many Perth councils require a building permit past 500 mm high and some also want engineering drawings. It varies by local government and by where the wall sits on your block. We check with your council when we quote.
Can you repair or replace an existing limestone wall?
